Let’s see how Celia Bowman, a local Northern Colorado business owner of Bowman Architecture, remodeled her own outdated kitchen.

Remodeling your kitchen can be a great way to improve your space and a great return on your investment. This is a Bowman Architecture Kitchen Remodel.

Celia started with a 1980’s kitchen with a floating wall. These are very common in Northern Colorado and are far from in style anymore. Celia and her husband had been looking to remodel their kitchen ever since they bought it eight years ago. While it took eight years to get here, the results were well worth the wait. Designing her own kitchen meant that she got to add her own feel and wants, compared with when she is designing spaces for clients. Celia is very focused on finding the exact right color, texture, appliance and feel for her clients and now it was her turn. She wanted an open and bright feeling compared to her previously dark and divided space.

First, she removed the popcorn ceiling herself. “I get the credit for removing the popcorn ceiling” she mentioned in our interview with her. For those of us that have removed popcorn ceiling before, I think that all of us would agree that we never want to do that again, despite the amazing improvement that it makes to the room. The next challenge was finding a down-draft stove top for the newly added kitchen island. Once the lack of a range hood was pointed out I immediately stated, “I didn’t realize what was missing”. It gave the kitchen such an open feeling. Without it there was nothing to block the view of the middle of the kitchen both into Celia’s living room and her eat-in dining room. An added bonus was there is no “head bonking,” something that everyone with a range hood has experienced. Some people want the range hood to really do its job of removing the cooking smells from the space, but that has never been a problem for Celia personally. Finding the down-draft stove top was no easy task, but the hunt was well worth the benefits that it added to Celia’s design.

By stacking the two appliances, this allowed her to have a double oven space where her previous oven/stove used to be. Since the oven and oven/microwave combo were much smaller than before she actually added cabinet space instead of losing it.

Looking for an open look.

Another challenge for this kitchen remodel was finding a space for the microwave. But this Bowman Architecture Kitchen Remodel was up to the challenge, now that she had designed a space without a range hood and with a stove top in the kitchen island. Celia had a brilliant solution to this as well. She opted for a microwave/oven combo. She then placed a full size oven below the microwave/oven combo for a double oven setup. This oven also had the added bonus of having Bluetooth so that she can connect it to her phone and preheat her oven on her way home. How cool is that!

That was also a concern when removing the floating wall. Once again this Bowman Architecture Kitchen Remodel had a solution to the removal of this storage area. While the wall was providing cabinet space, it was immediately made up for both in the kitchen island and around the double oven setup. Celia wanted to increase the functionality of the space ten-fold and this meant removing the old 1980’s cabinets. They were falling apart from the previous owner’s renters and it was high on Celia’s list of wants to have great cabinets, but she wasn’t looking to break the bank.

Celia was looking to do the work herself and save herself money. In order to accomplish this she went with IKEA cabinets, but an entirely different company for the doors to give them a high quality feel and a look much different than IKEA. “They look like million dollar cabinets!” I was so impressed by such a clever hack. Something I would never have thought of, but it saves her both money while still maintaining the high quality feel. She opted for the pull out cabinets because of their high level of functionality. “You can place your cookie sheets underneath them” and it helps Celia stay organized.

Achieving a bright, clean feel.

Another great tip that the architect shared was to scale your tile appropriately. What does this mean? Well, if you have a small kitchen choose tiles that are on the smaller size so that it “feels” like it fits in the kitchen. If you have a tile that is really big, then it won’t flow with your small kitchen. They selected a modern, geometric pattern that they loved so much that her husband and her decided to keep it going in all directions and cover the entire wall. Celia was happy to finally have a tile backsplash behind her sink instead of wood. It is so much easier to wipe down and keep clean and adds to the functionality.

To add to the clean and bright feeling of the kitchen, they selected white granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. One of Celia’s children’s favorite new additions is that their new refrigerator has a pull out drawer that has become their beverage drawer. Packed to the brim with La Croix and sodas, her children enjoy pulling out a cold drink when they get home from school. They are also enjoying climbing on their brand new kitchen island, but Celia is less thrilled about this being their new jungle gym.

Bowman Architecture is a local Northern Colorado business and is always looking to help people increase the joy they have in their space.

Increasing functionality and making sure it is exactly how her clients want it is what Celia loves most about her job.

Having a space how you want it is better for resale, Celia and I both agree, which is counterintuitive to some people. You are more likely to put the time and effort into getting something exactly how you want it instead of what you think will sell best in the future.

According to the architect, that is the real difference between an architect and a contractor. A contractor can tell you if that ugly, 1980’s floating wall can be knocked out, but they won’t help you realize what the space can be. Afterwards you will have a room with a hole in it, but with an architect you will be able to go back and forth with drawings to see exactly what you want in your new space. An architect will help you select colors, appliances, and so much more so that you are able to enjoy your space exactly how you want it! This is the true benefit of a Bowman Architecture Kitchen Remodel. If you are looking to redo a space in Northern Colorado, give Bowman Architecture a call.
